Sorry to hijack the thread, but it is a amateur question about digital XO's...
Do I have to bi-amp to utilize one?
Never had experience with one, so I thought I would ask....
Thanks,
-chris
This would be for my living room.
I'm generally happy with passives where passives where used from the factory...... probably because that's all I know. The 9864 was designed to be used with an active crossover, and I've always wanted to do that. It's got the passive crossover from an M500 in it currently. Bfish told me that it was probably done for cost reasons by the original installing contractor. The digital is so nice as far as being able to "dial in" a system...I'm spoiled by that. As I said in another post I cannot ever see myself going back to passives on anything I own.

The digital XO's have several functions...
The obvious is crossover...and you would have to multi amp to use that.
Essentially you are splitting the signal at the preamp level...if you recombine into one signal to go to an amp, you would have no crossover.
They also time align...delaying different signals to compensate for drivers not in the same plane...again you would have to multi amp. The delays are on the different crossover outputs to suit each driver...
The outputs can be set full range...so you would have some functions...
EQ..to include parametric, HP, LP, and /or graphic. You could use that.
Compression/limiting....you could use in full range mode....
Essentially you would just have an EQ with limiting, might as well buy that unless you are gonna multi amp later.
I hope I make sense here.
Your neighbors called. They like your music.
Thanks OG , that was clear enough for me....
